Bécancour Where nature meets modernity

We are Julie Boulianne and Laurie Therrien, your real estate brokers affiliated with Groupe Sutton-alliance. It's with great enthusiasm that we introduce you to Bécancour, the town in which we work on a daily basis. Located in Centre-du-Québec, the municipality of Bécancour stands proudly along the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, at the mouth of the river of the same name and facing Trois-Rivières, the regional metropolis.

Now boasting a modern industrial park and port, it was one of the first towns founded in New France (1647), after Québec (1608), Trois-Rivières (1634) and Montréal (1642). Its historic past and rich cultural life make it an inspiring and even exceptional tourist destination. Read our article: When was Bécancour founded?

Nature lovers will be delighted by the abundance of parks and green spaces. At the heart of a landscape that combines rural and urban, Bécancour offers a unique, dynamic and warm living environment. It's a town well worth exploring, and an excellent choice for a new home.

What are the sectors of the city of Bécancour?

The town of Bécancour is located on the St. Lawrence plain in the Centre-du-Québec region, at the crossroads of major communications routes. The municipality can be reached via highways 20, 55 and 40, as well as provincial roads 132, 138 and 259.

On October 17, 1965, it became Quebec's second amalgamated city after Laval (August 1965). Bringing together eleven municipal corporations spread over an area of 447.4 km2, the new city became the second-largest in the province after Quebec City (454.28 km2). By comparison, Montreal covers 365.65 km2 and Trois-Rivières, 288.92 km2.

Today, six sectors make up the urban agglomeration. Each sector bears witness, in its own way, to the history of a region whose economic vocation rapidly shifted from agriculture to heavy industry. The municipality's main sectors are : Saint-Grégoire, Sainte-Angèle, Précieux-Sang, Bécancour, Sainte-Gertrude and Gentilly. These correspond to the former towns amalgamated by the Jean Lesage government in 1965.

What are Bécancour's commercial streets?

Each sector of the city has its own main street with local shops. However, Bécancour Boulevard is the most important main artery. Stretching some 5 kilometers, it connects Route 132 to Autoroute 30 and crosses several sectors of the municipality: Bécancour, Gentilly, Saint-Grégoire and Saint-Angèle. A cluster of businesses can be found along Autoroute de l'Énergie (A 55) in the area of the traffic circle with A-30, then a little further up Saint-Grégoire on avenue Arsenault, boulevard des Acadiens and rue Bovet.

Why live in Bécancour?

The reasons we choose to live in a particular city or region are varied and often depend on personal preferences, professional, family and/or cultural circumstances. Find out in our article: What to do in Bécancour?
In our experience, including feedback from our customers, the main reasons for living in Bécancour fall into two broad categories: quality of life and cost of living.

Quality of life in Bécancour

The Léger polling firm has compiled a list of the happiest municipalities in Quebec in 2021. Bécancour ranked 8th. Quebecers' Index of Léger Happiness (IBL) is based on 25 influencing factors, including health, love, money, family and fulfillment. Here are some other factors that have surely influenced the quality of life in the Bécancour region:

  • Natural environment : Bécancour is located along the majestic St. Lawrence River, offering picturesque landscapes and opportunities for outdoor relaxation. Parks, bike paths and green spaces help create a pleasant living environment.
  • Economy and employment : Access to employment and career opportunities are essential for a good quality of life. Bécancour is home to a number of industrial and manufacturing companies, generating employment opportunities for its residents. This is all the more true thanks to the heart of the Filière batterie in the Bécancour Waterfront Industrial Park. The arrival of nearly 2,000 direct workers and several thousand more indirectly is expected.
  • Cultural and community life : Bécancour is a lively town. It offers a diversity of events, festivals and artistic activities throughout the year, creating a strong sense of community. The town is also home to a variety of associations and social clubs. It also boasts a number of tourist attractions, including the Ancêtre cheese factory, Quai des Brasseurs, Carpe Diem Soapworks, the Biodiversity Museum and the Vieux Moulin à vent de Saint-Grégoire. It is also part of the Route des Navigateurs tourist circuit.
Bécancour Grain Library

In 2024, La Grainothèque returns to the Bécancour library for its 3rd year of self-service. You can drop off and pick up seeds grown naturally, without chemical fertilizers, free of charge.

  • Education network : The Bécancour RCM offers all school levels directly on its territory, or nearby if you include Trois-Rivières and Drummondville. What's more, Gentilly 3 is an educational project worth discovering.
  • Services and amenities : Local services such as small shops, cafés, libraries and community organizations meet the vast majority of individual and family needs. They also play a central role as places where people can meet and exchange ideas.

The cost of living is incomparable!

According to the La place aux jeunes website: "It's possible to buy a house you like and still have money to live on. Just ask the people who chose Bécancour. Indeed, houses here are on average one and a half times less expensive than in Quebec City and three times less expensive than in Montreal. The cost of living here is also generally lower, so you'll have plenty of money left over to enjoy life!"

Maïlys Kerhoas' article in Web Narcity magazine concurs, highlighting the fact that Trois-Rivières (and by implication Bécancour) residents enjoy the second most affordable cost of living in Quebec when it comes to housing/rental ($8,023 per year including rent, electricity and tenant insurance). They also enjoy the lowest cost of public transportation (average $870 per year).

In terms of vacations ($1,297) and non-reimbursed health care ($1,577), the budget is comparable to that of Gatineau, Sherbrooke, Sept-Îles and Saguenay, but lower than that of the two big cities.
